Johannesburg – A 54-year-old Eastern Cape woman and her 13-year-old granddaughter have been wounded by gunmen seeking revenge for a killing they believe was caused by witchcraft, police said on Friday.
Captain Mduduzi Godlwana said the two gunmen, in their 20s, believed the grandmother was responsible for the death of a young boy in the Flagstaff community a few weeks ago.
They shot the woman twice, in the shoulder and leg, and teenager once in the leg in the kitchen of their home on Thursday evening.
The woman's son, who was sleeping in another room, woke when he heard the shots and called the police.
The woman and teenager were taken to the Holy Cross hospital, where their conditions were stable.
Police were still looking for the men.
Another woman and her four grandsons were also attacked over allegations of witchcraft in Sigubudu village, Ngqeleni, on August 22.
Ten men attacked the family believing the woman was going to bewitch youths in the village.

REALLY?! Can they really not get past the middle ages?
bias
Sun, 09/05/2010 - 10:33 — Damon LeffAs I said in my blog "Prejudicial beliefs about Witchcraft won't change overnight, but changing them must start with education, not with the suppression of access to the truth."

Centuries of bias in Africa against Witchcraft may take centuries to undo, or it may happen more rapidly if governments, civil societies and social and religious leaders call for an end to superstition and propaganda.
It's up to us, the real Witches, to ensure that that happens in our own lifetimes.
CGE responds
Mon, 09/06/2010 - 08:55 — Damon LeffI have, on behalf of SAPRA, succeeded in persuading the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) to actively pursue a programme against witch-hunts in S.A.
The Commission has published this press release, and has promised to work closely with the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and the South African Pagan Rights Alliance (SAPRA) to address issues arising.

Absolutely AWESOME, Damon!
Mon, 09/06/2010 - 09:55 — CharlesYour ongoing efforts are incredible in both their intensity and their sustained application - and the fruits are becoming more and more apparent.
Many thanks for all the work you're putting in on behalf of the innocents out there, as well as for the Pagan community.
C.
Always a pleasure Charles.
Mon, 09/06/2010 - 10:26 — Damon LeffAlways a pleasure Charles. :-)
I've been requesting this from both CGE and the SAHRC since February 2007, so I'd say their eventual acknowledgment of the problem is long overdue.
I'm not overly enthusiastic by CGE's press release. I think they should have condemned witch-hunts in so many words. But, it's a start in the right direction I think.
I will keep sitting on their shoulders until I get what I believe to be the right response. :-)
Thank you
