Recent online headlines read 'South Africa outraged over Mandela autopsy painting'. No, South Africa is not outraged, but one African National Congress senior spokesperson has indeed poured his personally percolated fury over South African painter Yiull Damaso, and the Mail & Guardian for daring to publish a photo of his painting. There's an important distinction here. The ANC is not South Africa, just a ruling political party whose most prominent members like to pretend to speak for all South Africans on matters of culture.
