'Witchcraft' murder in Lusikisiki
2010-05-30 20:02
Johannesburg - A 70-year-old Eastern Cape woman has been shot and killed, police said on Sunday.

Police suspect the killing which took place in a locality near Lusikisiki was witchcraft-related, said Mzukisi Fatyela.

The incident happened on Saturday night, when two people kicked open the woman's door and shot her dead.

"(For) a woman of this age it is not normal that she is killed...they are killed when the killing is related to witchcraft," he said.

Sweep it under the carpet

Yet another horror story! Two suspects (whom the media calls "people") kick open a 70-year old's door, Hollywood style, and the police's reasoning (or lack thereof) is immediately that since it is not normal for a 70-year old lady to get gunned down in her own home, that it must be "witchcraft-related". Ludicrous! In our country crimes against the elderly, especially women, are the order of the day. So the perpetrators are "people" and the old lady is immediately labelled a "witch". How typical! Is the logical conclusion that they were there to take her pension money a far more realistic deduction? No, let's just sweep another murder under the carpet and call it "witchcraft related".
