Dagnab and BLAST it!

Dagnab and BLAST it!

I just had a strangely unsatisfying conversation with the P.A. to the CEO of ABSA Bank (Maria Ramos), one Nadine Drutman, in response to a query I raised to Maria about why Jewish, Christian, Hindu and Muslim holidays and feastdays are recognised by management (Ms. Ramos sends out a regular newsletter wishing various beliefs a happy or blessed festival at the appropriate time), but Pagan festivals are not accorded the same recognition. Very intelligent lady, is Nadine, and articulate too.

However.
I received only the assurance that the issue would be discussed with the entire HR contingent before a decision would be taken, but their main 'problem' is with the potential to set a precedent by recognising we Pagans, whereupon they might (note that well: "MIGHT") be deluged with requests from every religious sect known to man for recognition of their OWN feastdays and holidays.

And I really DO understand that concern in theory - but for pity's sake! Are ALL of the 38,000-odd Christian sects they're worried about recognised by SARS and Home Affairs in South Africa? I really don't think so...

Thank you for your well-placed effort Charles!

I wish to express our gratitude for your well-placed effort Charles! The foot is in the door. And yes, you are 100% right. It's a far cry from equality, but they're at least speaking to us. Keep working them, as you know how to do. Bring to their attention that a lot of these festivals/celebrations coincide and furthermore that what we intiatlly are aiming for is the sharing of space for "Season's Greetings" under the ABSA notice. As far as I understood nobody was yet asking for the day off. Or am I mistaken?

Well done Charles!

Ed-zachary!

Nobody wants days off - we're all mostly (yup, mostly!) contractors, so time off = unpaid leave.

All we want is a little recognition.

I'll keep on hammering at the lady - and if she doesn't crack and have me fired, we'll get our greetings yet!

keep walking

I don't buy ABSA's concern at all Charles. Either management is willing to recognize the religious affiliations of all their employees and clients equally, or none at all. :-)
