It's interesting and informative (to me, at least) that self-proclaimed occult 'expert' Kobus Jonker has reached a decision regarding Harmse's claims that he was acting under demonic/Satanic influence(s) with which I actually agree (Harmse was NOT under any influence, in my opinion, other than his own).
Even MORE interesting to me is that Jonker reached that decision based entirely on fabricated, fanciful, and fallacious 'tests', much the same as those the 'Church' in the Burning Times employed to "detect" Witches. Such as: the absence of a Red & Black colour scheme in Harmse's bedroom (given that Harmse's family isn't apparently prosperous enough to redecorate their son's bedroom on every whim that enters his head - "...(the room)... had normal coloured bedspreads and curtains whereas a satanist would only use red and black") is apparently a prime indicator to Jonker that Harmse is not a Satanist.
The use of candles ("some of which were pink or white") in his room (for atmosphere? To mask the smell of cigarettes? The court transcript actually notes that another schoolboy witness recounted how he was smoking outside when called in to the school for assembly! SMOKING! At SCHOOL!? "We were smoking outside when the teachers called us in and I walked in with JC, Jacques and some others. We stopped in the passage when we saw Morne standing with his sword, wearing a mask, and at first I thought he was busy with some kind of school project," Bouwer said.- from IOL) as opposed to other colours (presumably red and/or black) further proves to Jonker that Harmse is not a Satanist.
What kind of pseudo-scientific socio-politico psycho-babble is Jonker spouting? And what sense, to anybody with an I.Q. in double digits, does the correlation of Satanism (a Christian belief-system with a Christian God) to Wicca (a Pagan belief-system with NO connection to Christianity or its Gods in any way, shape, or form) in Jonker's statements make? Or the apparent clincher for Jonker: "Harmse had not spoken in Demonic languages on the day of the murder"... Is Jonker COMPLETELY unaware that what he has stated under oath are infallible signs of Satanism and Demonic possession, are nothing more or less than Hollywood special effects created by Hollywood script writers purely for the entertainment of ignoramuses such as himself?
I very recently read the hysterical denunciations of the education system by a mother who questioned how her (apparently) genius daughter could be penalised in a mathematics test for getting the right answer the wrong way - the girl in question received only a small portion of the allocated mark for each calculation because her demonstration of the method was incorrect - or, not written down in the conventional manner, according to the doting mother. The mother's statement was that, as long as you got the right answer, it didn't matter how you got there - and in fact, she postulated that EVERYBODY else was stupid for doing their mathematics in the prescribed way and getting not only the answer but the workings correct, while her daughter was demonstrating her superhuman intelligence by arriving at the correct answer by the INcorrect method. Everybody but the child is wrong, she says - and the education system (as far as mathematics is concerned, anyway) is useless because it insists that things should be done properly. So much for O.B.E. - where the 'result' is supposedly more important than the method employed to reach it. This phenomenon also begs the question - in the absence of the correct 'workings', how can the examiner be certain that the individual in question was not in possession of the required answers beforehand, lacking the skill and knowledge necessary to produce same results, and therefore 'created' the workings to try and legitimise the (cheated) answers - basically to cover up their cheating?
This laughable testimony by the self-proclaimed occult 'expert' Kobus Jonker appears to be exactly the same kind of thing.
If the same answer (conclusion) is reached, what difference does it make how you got there, people ask?
Well, to me, it makes a HUGE difference. Just because your 'method' (if there is one) luckily results in the correct conclusion today, doesn't guarantee a repeatable result should any of the variables in the equation change somehow. If the correct method is not followed, then you could reach a different conclusion the next time, depending on how you perceive the variables to have presented. It becomes even MORE dangerous if you consider that the conclusion (answer) was pre-ordained, and the reasons provided by Jonker (for instance) merely an attempt to cover-up that fact.
Surely, if we want and expect justice to be done, and to be seen to be done, we need a universally accepted method of reaching conclusions that is demonstrably fair, documented, accurate, and repeatable in all cases, by any person trained in that method.
NONE of these criteria is demonstrated in Jonker's testimony. And as Pagans, we should be VERY angry about this.
I am.
What ticks me off,
Wed, 09/02/2009 - 17:59 — wotanwulfIs the fact that K.J. gives the impression that Satanists and Witches have basically one goal-domination of others. If this is the case, what the Hel have Christians and other religions been doing all these years? Rather be fair and say that the will to dominate is a human trait, otherwise, please,PLEASE show me where pagans or satanists tried to dominate schools with their religion, forced themselves onto the government of the day, or when that was not possible, suck up to the government of the day to gain power(and change doctrine to comply with 'government policy' while they are at it).
Jonker misses one esoteric point, that Witchcraft, in most forms ARE about control-control over one's own life, and when you have attained that, control over other people becomes obsolete.
As to all his fantasy-oriented ideas, I think this guy has been watching way too much late night horror movies.

Wed, 09/02/2009 - 15:35 — Damon LeffThere is NO precedent for Jonker's allegations regarding Satanism and Wicca. NO self-identified Satanist or Witch or Wiccan has ever been found guilty of a violent ritual crime in any South African court of law - FACT!
Question is....
Thu, 09/03/2009 - 07:10 — Rayne SeleneWhere to from here? Do you feel that this warrants action on our part as Pagans belonging to the SAPC?
What about signed petitions? Would it work? Perhaps something more forward like an article addressed to Mr DJ in major papers?
SAPRA Press Release
Thu, 09/03/2009 - 10:15 — Damon LeffJonker no Occult expert
- 3 September 2009
The recent case of Morne Harmse has received a great deal of media coverage, currently focusing on the decision of the South Gauteng High Court to allow alleged expert testimony from a self-proclaimed expert on Satanism and the occult, Kobus Jonker.
In light of broadcast and published statements by Mr. Jonker and his assertions regarding Morne Harmse, the South African Pagan Rights Alliance (SAPRA) would like to draw attention to the following.
SAPRA would like to state categorically that Mr. Jonker is no expert of the Occult and that his testimony and subsequent statements appear to have been constructed on nothing more than faulty associative speculation. The five-pointed star Jonker refers to as a "pentagon" is actually called a pentagram. Any credible occult expert would know this.
The manner in which Mr. Jonker deduced Harmse's alleged involvement in the occult was presumptive at best. There is no credible method of analyzing whether or not one is a Wiccan or Witch or Satanist based solely on the contents of one's household or wardrobe. Wiccans, a great deal of whom self-identify as Witches, may in fact utilize any various number of colored candles (including black and red), wall decorations, ornamentation and home décor styles.
Mr Jonker's testimony and the one-sided reporting of that testimony by the media, conveys a potentially devastating misconception to the general public regarding constitutionally protected religions; one which could divide families and friends by placing under suspicion anyone possessing the items, described by Mr. Jonker, in their households.
The South African Pagan Rights Alliance denounces Kobus Jonker's frivolous claims regarding the occult.
