In July 2008 the South African Law Reform Commission (SALRC) began a preliminary investigation in order to determine whether or not the Witchcraft Suppression Act 3 of 1957 could be considered for review.
The Law Reform Commission has responded with the following good news.
1. On 1 August 2009 the South African Law Reform Commission considered the inclusion of the following investigation in its research programme: “Review of the Witchcraft Suppression Act 3 of 1957 and the Mpumalanga Witchcraft Suppression Bill, 2007”.
2. The Commission approved that it could be recommended to the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development that he approve the inclusion of the investigation in the Commission’s research programme in terms of section 5(1) of the South African Law Reform Commission Act 19 of 1973.
SALRC’s process
Mon, 08/17/2009 - 12:03 — Damon LeffThe SALRC’s process has the following steps:
Step1: Receipt of request to investigate a matter with a view to law reform; - DONE
Step2: A pre-investigation by one of the SALRC’s researchers; - DONE
* Step3: Commission reviews researcher’s findings and decides either not to investigate the matter or to place the matter in a group to be considered for submission to the Minister for investigations to be conducted by the current Commission; - DONE
Step 4: Commission’s Working Committee seats with input from entire Commission seats to consider list to be sent to the Minister;
Step 5: List of recommended investigations is sent to the Minister;
Step6: Minister decides which of the recommended investigations are to be proceeded with;
Step7: Commission assigns investigations to teams with a view to commencing the necessary research.
That IS good news!
