NICER WITCH: ANC MP Adrian Williams outside parliament and the pentagram he put on the day he was sworn in Pictures:
His pagan name is Malachite and he belongs to the Coven of the Silver Sickle.
Meet Adrian Williams, the only pentacle-wearing witch in parliament.
But the card-carrying ANC and South African Communist Party member, 43, from Mpumalanga has renounced the terms “witch” and “witchcraft” because he maintains the issue needs to be treated with sensitivity in South Africa.
Williams practices “magick”, but calls himself a pagan or eclectic wiccan. “Eclectic means that I don’t follow any specific tradition — where they have a way of dressing, they cast their circle in a particular way. I don’t have any particular way of invoking.
“I don’t call myself a witch. I distance myself from those terms because they are highly offensive to the vast majority of people in this country.
“In South Africa, a witch is someone who comes into your house, kills your children and cuts off their genitalia.”
When he was sworn in as a member of parliament in April, he put on his pentacle ring and has not removed it since. South Africa’s liberal laws protect him and wearing a pentacle is like wearing a cross to work, he said.
He described his chosen religion as nature-based — and about love and tolerance. “I believe in the God and the Goddess and the elements: the air, the fire, the earth, the water and the spirit. I believe that the devil exists in as much as I believe that a coat hanger exists. I don’t worship the coat hanger and don’t worship the devil,” he said.
Williams, who thinks there is much to be learnt from traditional healers, went to Christian schools and refers to his girlfriend as an “ordinary” person.
Asked if South Africa would ever be ready for “witches”, he said: “It’s like 20 years ago — if you had asked someone in the ANC if they ever thought they would be in parliament.
“If an effort is made ... and the effort needs to be made by pagans ... who else can liberate that word (witch) but pagans?”
Pagan rights groups have asked the South African Law Reform Commission to consider repealing the Witchcraft Suppression Act of 1957. It prohibits knowledge or the practice of witchcraft, criminalises the accusation of others as witches — as well as the practicing of divination.
Damon Leff, convener of the South African Pagan Rights Alliance, said the 1957 act institutionalized prejudice against witchcraft and instead of stemming witch-hunts, it fuelled them.
But Williams said the rights groups were being “arrogant”. He said self-defined witches should be sensitive to the majority of South Africans and their beliefs.
“Go to Limpopo and declare that you’re a witch and see how long you survive,” he said.
Asked to comment on the Witchcraft Suppression Act, he said: “It does not undermine any right except the right to define yourself.
“I just think it’s very arrogant of white pagans in South Africa to push for rights they know will be detrimental to the majority. It would be ideal if we could change the perception of what witchcraft is.”
As former Convener of the SAPC I hereby wish to remind fellow Council Members of our stand in the face of this public statement by an individual pagan. It is Williams who chose to use the diminutive form of “Pagan”.
Williams states that he is a “pagan” who belongs to the “coven of the silver sickle”. Pagans in RSA are fighting for the reclamation of Witchcraft and Paganism in SA. That is why we capatilise the word “Pagan”. Paganism is an official religion in RSA, the SAPC is a registered religion in RSA in terms of the SARS Act. We furthermore have registered “Reverends” with Home Affairs who are legally entitled to perform Civil Unions in terms of the Civil Union Act. These factors make Paganism “ipso facto” an official religion. This includes the religion of Witchcraft.
Williams’ hypocrisy shines through by admitting that he belongs to a “coven”. This term is used by modern Witches and Wiccans in Neo-Paganism. He furthermore self-identifies as a Wiccan. This is nothing less than a “witch”. It is delusional and hypocritical to call SA Pagans “arrogant” for using the word “witch” when he himself is in fact a self confessed witch. Who is he trying to fool? Does Williams truly believe that practicing what he calls “detrimental to the majority” and then denying it will somehow make him acceptable to the majority? What will the “majority” say when they realize that he is hiding his true colours behind falsehood? Williams states that “If an effort is made ... and the effort needs to be made by pagans ... who else can liberate that word (witch) but pagans?”
Then he proceeds to call “white pagans in South Africa” ARROGANT.
This is utter hypocrisy. On the one hand he states that we should reclaim it, and then he calls it arrogant and “renounces” it!
Furthermore, Williams’ racist nature is demonstrated by the above comment. The SAPC has got, Indian, Black and Coloured members. Williams’ ignorance or refusal to acknowledge reality to further his personal agenda ,is hereby exposed.
Williams belongs to a “coven” – this is witchcraft.
He calls himself a “Wiccan” – this is witchcraft.
He wears a Pagan pentacle used by Witches – this is witchcraft.
THEN HE RENOUNCES WITCHCRAFT PUBLICALLY IT AND CALLS WHITE SA PAGANS ARROGANT!!!
My opening statement at the SAPC Conference of 2007 was:
MINUTES -SAPC Conference
8 September 2007
Venue: Theosophical Society in Melville, Jhb.
Chairperson: Luke Martin
Gen Secretary: Enmarie Potgieter
Minutes: Morgause with amendments by delegates
Luke Martin: Brief introduction, greetings. "This is a conference of Witches for Witches".
Williams was at this conference of Witches, as a witch.
He attempted to espouse his so-called stance at the conference, I quote from the minutes:
Adrian Williams: Proposed we release the terms “witch” and “witchcraft” in the interests of spirituality and ask for international support from Pagans abroad to do the same in an act of solidarity.
Unrest in the house.
Luke Martin: Those in favor of relinquishing the words witch and witchcraft please raise their hands.
Nine delegates raised their hands:
9/61 – Minority
The opinion of Williams was rejected.
The outcome of the above vote and subsequent discussion at the 2007 SAPC Conference became known as “The Melville Mandate”.
I quote again from the minutes:
Damon Leff: Cannot criminalize any group on basis of terminology. Government must look at preventing crime.
Enmarie Potgieter: The Act has been a blessing and a bane. We stood up in the media. We must not step back. We cannot compromise in what we are. Don’t back down now! We want to be called Witches.
Luke Martin: Explained to Dr. Motshekga the earlier vote and the overwhelming majority for the reclamation of the word Witch.
Dr. Motshekga: It’s important that you state your objectives clearly. The Public has the right to know.
Ian: We must get the Government to understand that there are two types of Witchcraft. We must get them to understand our brand of it, so we don’t fall under the wrong one.
The SAPC publicly renounces Adrian Williams as a hypocrite of the highest order. He has no standing whatsoever in the SA Pagan community, yet he takes it upon himself to renounce the legally and officially recognized religion of Paganism (inc Witchcraft) in SA. This is extreme prejudice, hypocrisy and a violation of the Bill of Rights. The SAPC distances itself from Adrian Williams and states for the record that he in no way represents anyone in the SA Pagan community.

The SAPC Forums have been described by many as a “tough” place. We have since tried to discourage attacks on people. This current thread, however, is an EXCEPTION!
The following statement warrants this exception to the rule
"...the Constitution is not the supreme law in this country - the will of the majority is the supreme law. And me and 40 million blacks will do what we like - you had better get used to it, and relax into the pain..." Adrian Williams in an email to Charles of the SAPC.

To anyone who may read this, whether it be from old, sunny SA or the world-out-there…
We as Pagans in South Africa currently sit in a shadow cast by the controlled and ignorant majority. We have faced challenges before, and personally I have no room in my heart for any doubt that we will rise above the ashes once more… though the price involved is a topic for much debate.
As you see, even in the midst of battle against those who seek to destroy that which many of us have dedicated our very lives to – we find little unity amongst our own kind. And the way I see it, it will be this that cripples us as a community before any pompous, polically-flavoured twit and his massive band of mindless clones do. I could go on forever about the dangers of fighting amongst outselves while the entire population of “ordinaries” is out to nail us as well – but the point I’d like to make here is this: Live by your highest truth or die trying. I would sooner that myself and my line go to early graves in the Spirit of our convictions than to live a life of explanation. I will make my acts of daily living my demonstration. And to the empty beyond with those who do not like it. Adrian Williams is merely a figurehead being dangled on a stick by a hidden puppet master like every single other politician. Those who are unenlightened are like moths to the flame… we as warriors being that flame.
The nail that sticks out gets hammered ~ Chinese proverb
There is no rest for the brave. My hope lies now with those who, like me, seek justice in unity. Without a wall, we cannot be well protected.

I REST MY CASE!
Mon, 08/10/2009 - 13:56 — CharlesIn reply to the Adrian Williams Sunday Times posting, under the heading "I stand vindicated":
I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy being able to say "I REST MY CASE!!!!" But let's not forget that this little backstabbing human being, Adrian Williams, is involved with a certain other person whom I was recently accused of "unfairly categorising" and of being (negatively) prejudiced towards. This entire affair has, to my mind, all the hallmarks of the political manouevering that is and always has been a hallmark of Ms. Vos's aspirations to power.
Let me tell you this: I have known Adrian Williams for close to a decade. From the very first time I met him, Adrian Williams was nothing but a freeloader, relying on others to pay his way for him, saying, in essence, "Gee, poor me, I'm a Communist working for the greater good of everybody out there. I own nothing, as I have devoted myself to caring for others less fortunate than myself - but I'm a Pagan, so if you're a genuine, loving, caring Pagan, you will pay for me". And, of course, the classic "One day when I'm in power I won't forget you".
The implication was always that his penury was a temporary condition, and he would often joke about how 'some animals are more equal than others' - how, as a trusted communist with many years of service under his belt, he was entitled to more 'benefits' than certain others. So much for the communist principle of "from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs" - he was quite open about how luxurious the lifestyles of senior communists in power (as for example seen in Russia) are (were) in comparison to the rank and file. He was also quite open about the fact that communism as a political system had failed all over the world, but used to say that communism could be made to work in Africa – it just needed to be implemented completely and mercilessly with no allowance for resistance (echoes of Stalin or what? He would say "It's for their OWN good". Somehow that reminded me of PW Botha and his wagging finger - and I never liked that either...)
However, he never DID quite answer the question of how he reconciled his SUPPOSED religious beliefs with his public declarations of atheism - atheism being a cornerstone of Communism. However, he loved all the attention the ladies gave him - something about Adrian seemed to trigger the mothering instinct in certain women, and he was careful to cultivate the 'little boy lost' image for these individuals.
I subsequently became aware of his intention to subvert the Melville gathering in collaboration with Ms. Vos and several others (history proved me right, and will provide those names if you're interested enough to do a little reading of the minutes), and I made sure that his dishonourable intentions were timeously brought to the attention of those who could and would protect the rights of us ordinary Pagans. Note that, were it not for those particular individuals, we Pagans would even now be living under the control of Adrian and Ms. Vos, living out their strange little dream of 'reclamation through renunciation'.
I won't bore you with ALL the details, but Adrian threatened to beat me up, he threatened to have people 'take me out', he threatened to sue me for defamation of character (as if he HAS any character, let alone morals or ethics), and even threatened me that "Me and 40 million blacks will do what we want to you white Pagans, we will take away the words "Witch" and "Witchcraft" - relax into the pain". I still have copies of those emails - that is a verbatim quote.
Well, I'm still waiting for his threats to materialise. His hitmen are either spectacularly incompetent, or hopelessly underpaid. His legal team is either hopelessly overworked, or completely non-existent. Taken together, I would call his 'enforcement team' the "hitsquad without a clue" - either that, or I'm a dead man walking. Doesn't feel that way, though.
Adrian doesn't like direct confrontations - he's a coward who would rather scheme and connive, lie and cheat to get what he wants, than work honestly. He joined the Communist Party, and started attending secret meetings. And the more he got involved, the more his little ego was stroked - after all, here's a pimply youth with very little real intellect, no courage to speak of, absolutely no self-discipline, but a real gift for remembering and repeating slogans, and he's attending meetings with people who are spoke about in lofty government circles and in newspaper editorials as enemies of the state - and all of a sudden he's PART of this clandestine circle, part of his own little "Secret Society", and the hormonally challenged little Adrian is elevated to the status of "Enemy of the State".
Gee whiz!
Even before his voice made its first attempt at breaking, he achieved 'importance'. And despite his failure at everything in life that is important, such as being a proper parent to his child, he has clung to that 'importance', to that notoriety, to that illusion of importance. Of course, to add to his 'secret society' complex, He became a Pagan - PFSA and CAM were running courses, Paganism was (still is, actually) an Occult religion - if he failed in politics, maybe he could become the Pagan Pope - and this 'secret' aspect of Paganism further bolstered his fragile ego, and even lent him some credibility with the ladies who found their mothering instincts stirred by this pimply youth with the pathetic attempt at a beard, who was so obviously lost and bewildered in a real world where real actions actually had real consequences, and whose whole being cried out for nurturing and protection - not realising that little Adrian was a predator of the worst sort.
And so now we see little Adrian, all growed up like Topsy, sitting in Parliament as an ANC member - despite his deriding the ANC and its leaders as intellectually challenged and sellout politicians (I heard his characterisation of them as such on more than one occasion), and of his characterisation of the Communist Party as the REAL power that runs the ANC, without whom the ANC have NO chance of governing - still struggling to grow more than a pitiful excuse for a beard, still struggling to subdue the adolescent acne that he never quite outgrew - and he's there in the Sunday Times, accusing white Pagans of being racists because we have reclaimed the words "Witch" and "Witchcraft", because we have denied him the chance to rule us together with his mentor, Ms. Vos, and because OUR words, in OUR language, were misappropriated by Christian missionaries to describe traditional tribal healers and medicine men.
How much more misguided, prejudiced, and at odds with the constitution can you get? He doesn't really need Paganism any more - for the immediate future - but he lusts after power, and he craves to exercise that power over those who once had to support him, to feed him, to give him drink, to pay his petrol for him - because he was part of the Pagan community, and that's what Pagans do (or did): they look after their own. He can't forget that some of us looked down on him, even then, because we didn't believe his lies, we didn't buy his reasonings, and we didn't accept his pitiful excuses, and he will never forgive us for destroying his own illusions about his infallibility and superiority. And what better way to wreak revenge than to take away from us what identifies us as who we are as individuals and as a community, the terms "Witch" and "Witchcraft"?
He can't even grasp the anomaly - because, as he said to me in an email that I reposted on the original mailing list (just post-Melville Mandate) for all to see, and which many discounted "...the Constitution is not the supreme law in this country - the will of the majority is the supreme law. And me and 40 million blacks will do what we like - you had better get used to it, and relax into the pain..." - which is a precise and living illustration of what Thomas Jefferson (3rd President of the U.S.A.) said about democracy: "A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine."
The chickens have come home to roost.
Adrian Williams is showing his true colours.
Ms. Vos is involved.
And guess what?
I REST MY CASE!
SAPRA Press Release
Mon, 08/10/2009 - 11:58 — Damon LeffANC MP wants Witches to stop calling themselves Witches?
http://www.paganrightsalliance.org/press.html
Mpumalanga ANC MP Adrian Williams has accused the South African Pagan Rights Alliance of being arrogant in pursuing the reclamation of the terms Witch and Witchcraft.
SAPRA rejects the allegation of arrogance and notes that reclamation of loaded terminology has long been a recognized method of educating the broader public and fighting for the rights of unrecognized minorities.
While Mr Williams self-identifies as Pagan, it should be noted that he has no mandate to speak on behalf of all the Witches or Witchcraft practitioners in South Africa, many of whom have already expressed a desire to reclaim the terminology.
SAPRA believes that the difficulty is one of translation and attitude, with an inappropriate substitution of the word 'Witch' for "bad practitioner of magic" by early settlers who perpetuated a prejudice against Witchcraft long seen in European society.
Contrary to Mr Williams, SAPRA believes that no person has the right to perpetrate acts of violence against another on the basis of their cultural or religious beliefs.
No person is guilty of practising Witchcraft (whether for harm or good) on the basis of an accusation. Accusations of bewitchment are rarely based on sound evidence or fact, but are often motivated through fear, superstition, jealousy, envy and spite.
Any and all cultural and religious beliefs that portray Witches as inherently evil and portray Witchcraft as a danger to society are based on historically constructed superstitions and deliberately constructed propaganda.
The only real Witches in Africa are those (whether white or black-skinned) who actually claim to be Witches. We Witches will NEVER relinquish our right to call ourselves Witches.
We fervently work towards an understanding and acceptance of all cultures, in which all South Africans will have the right to practice their own religions with tolerance and understanding, and we do not believe we will achieve that goal through fooling people with words.
The South African Pagan Rights Alliance advises Mr. Williams to refrain from dictating religious policy to South African citizens who are Witches and who seek to exercise their constitutional right to freedom of religion.

Sun, 08/09/2009 - 08:31 — Damon LeffWe Witches think it's arrogant of a communist ANC member of Parliament to presume that the majority whom we, according to Williams, offend by claiming our right to call ourselves Witches, even have the right to make allegations of witchcraft against innocent persons.
The ANC will not dictate policy on religion to Witches and neither will Adrian Williams !
Beliefs that motivate witch-hunts won't change by hiding behind another name.

HAVE WE BEEN BETRAYED????
Mon, 08/10/2009 - 13:37 — MorgausePagan Forums (countrywide) are abuzz with the Williams issue. I wish to quote from “Betrayal and Betrayers” by Malin Akerstrom pg.28, in which the contempt towards betrayers is beautifully illustrated. To quote from this page, Cicero and Tacitus, “No wise man ever thought that a traitor could be trusted” and “Betrayers are hated even by those whom they benefit”.
“Loki did not hesitate to betray Thor to the giant Geirrod in order to save his own skin. He learnt that the propensity for betrayal is a persistent flaw in personal character. It is not a one-time activity, it is repetitive.”
Two examples of betrayal out of classical writings we are familiar with are the cases of Marcus Brutus and that of Judas Iscariot.
Judas accused the “son of god”, Jesus, of heresy, betraying him with a friendly gesture, a kiss. Marcus Brutus, spurred by his great love for the Republic, betrayed and jointly killed his former friend, Julius Caesar.
In Greek mythology stories of betrayal also abound. “The moral lessons often point out the futility of the betrayer – sins like these do not pay!” We come across this in the story of Ariadne who betrayed her father’s trust because she fell in love with Theseus; the two sail away together but Theseus abandons her on a beach at Naxos, in favour of her sister Phaedra.
I have a confession to make. My flexible sense of justice, honour and trust are broken. No matter how many times I read and re-read the Williams article, my Spirit is no less offended.
I say to Mr. Williams: “Either you were misquoted, or you are going down in the annals as one who betrayed his own”.
Vos vestros servate, meos mihi linquite mores - You cling to your own ways and leave mine to me. (Petrarch)

ANC MP wants Witches to stop calling themselves Witches?
Sun, 08/09/2009 - 10:46 — Damon LeffIn October 2007 Mpumalanga ANC MP Adrian Williams, after having relinquished his right to call himself a Witch, swore to have the words 'Witch' and 'Witchcraft' banned in South Africa.
"The PPA stands against any Pagan institution that places the reclamation of contentious English words ahead of all other rights and freedoms that Pagans in South Africa seek to gain. We oppose any group or person that refuses to compromise on this issue, because it may ultimately jeopardise the most important issues, namely, official recognition of Paganism as a religion and the granting of all other constitutional rights to Pagans."
[Adrian Williams - Aims & Objectives 6. and 7. - Progressive Pagan Alliance Mission Statement (2007)]
William's often repeated insistence that self-defined Witches relinquish the terms 'Witch' and 'Witchcraft' stands in direct contradiction to the aims and objectives of those who support reclamation. Witchcraft is an internationally recognised Pagan spirituality and has been instrumental in the formation and development of modern Paganism in South Africa.
Essentially William's insistence on persuading members of a recognised religious minority to relinquish their right to self-identify amounts to an act of suppression of individual liberty and equality - in effect, the suppression of the inalienable right of every individual to self-determination, and to do so as free and equal citizens of a democratic dispensation which is bound by law to protect and promote religious freedom and equality for all equally.
Individual self-determination and self-identity (what one calls oneself and how one defines what one is) are not mutually exclusive principles. The individual and communal right to self-definition and self-determination is a cornerstone of the principles of freedom of religion and belief and is constitutionally enshrined through the notion of according and protecting human dignity to and for all equally.
In 'Hegel's Philosophy of Right' (1821) George Hegel wrote, "The right to what is in essence inalienable is imprescriptible, since the act whereby I take possession of my personality, of my substantive essence, and make myself a responsible being, capable of possessing rights and with a moral and religious life, takes away from these characteristics of mine just that externality which alone made them capable of passing into the possession of someone else. When I have thus annulled their externality, I cannot lose them through lapse of time or from any other reason drawn from my prior consent or willingness to alienate them." - 'Hegel's Philosophy of Right'(1821) George Hegel, T.M. Knox, trans. Oxford University Press, 1967.
The right to human dignity is based on the common assumption that all men and women have the right to have their "substantive essence" respected simply by virtue of their belonging to the human family. No man or woman should determine for another how that other should think or define themselves, their beliefs or religion. Every individual has the exclusive right to self-ownership.
As a Witch, I will not relinquish my inalienable right to self-ownership, self-identification, self-definition and self-determination. To do so would indeed be an affront to my dignity, liberty and right to belief and religion. Freedom of religion is a fundamental human right. I will fight to keep that right.

Sun, 08/09/2009 - 09:46 — MorgauseThe ideology behind a lame sacrifice has always eluded my understanding. The failure to recognize personal agendas which propel the selfish forward in their drive to impose their small-minded opinions, the superbia, the egotistical refusal to reason for the genuine common good, the belief that position equal status, the abuse of “power” with a shelf-life, and that betrayal of kind can ever lead to acceptance or even recognition by anyone worthy of being called a Pagan, is indeed beyond any common razioncinio and logic. Can anything good ever come from any of this? Negative self-styled heroes simply do not understand the importance of the group.
